Chapter 15

The next morning after breakfast, the Manning kitchen was full of women making sandwiches. Elizabeth had called her friends who regularly helped her with feeding the homeless, including her best friend, Harper Bensen.

“Lizzie, what can I do to help?” Logan asked. While he was against them going to Bozeman, he wasn’t about to let his fiancé run into danger without him backing her up. So he called a few friends to join them.

The house was full of cowboys who felt it was their duty to protect the cowgirls of Beacon Creek.

“Find the coolers we have out in the shed. We’ll need them to keep the lunches cool before handing them out.” Elizabeth gave Logan his orders, and he took Mark to go searching for the items.

The rest of the cowboys were in the living room, discussing what they’d heard about the shenanigans happening on the various ranches.

Drake Addison was holding court with the men and telling them about the Miller ranch. “I heard he lost two hundred head of cattle two days ago.”

Noah Westin added, “I heard it was over three hundred head.”

The girls in the kitchen could hear the guys, and Callie shook her head. “Is this an example of the Diner Divas?”

Elizabeth laughed. “Probably. Mr. Miller is one of my clients. I saw him yesterday and he said he lost ten head, as far as he could tell.”

“Ten, two hundred, or three hundred? It’s all the same, right?” Harper winked at her best friend and laughed.

“If you ask Cindy Macon, it probably is all the same. But it’s not. Ten head of cattle could just be a counting error, but three hundred? That’s definitely a rustler.” Elizabeth scrunched her nose. As a rancher and a vet, she disliked cattle rustlers with a passion.

“So, you think it could just be an accounting error?” Callie asked.

She doubted missing ten head of cattle, and reporting them missing, was a mistake. She could see Mr. Williams being off by one or two, but not ten. Unless he had tens of thousands of cattle? She doubted anyone had that many around here.

“No, I do think someone stole from him. But ten tells me it’s someone looking to feed a small group. Probably a couple families on the run.” Elizabeth considered the possibilities.

“Or a large group of homeless?” Harper added with a pointed look at Elizabeth. The nurse thought all the issues lately had to do with Bart and his gang, but she still wanted to go and help the women. She agreed with Callie—heading out to Bozeman and confronting Bart and his gang would give them a good idea if he was involved or not.

“Huh, that could be it,” Callie mused. If Bart was responsible for a large group of homeless and he couldn’t feed them all, they would stop working for him. They might even gang up and go after Bart. He had to at least feed his troops. And if food was scarce, some would be willing to do whatever they needed to eat.
